50 books, 150 Pages or Less

October 12, 2010

I’m not just a northeast Kansas-area librarian, I’m also a client.  And, as a client/patron of the Lawrence Public Library, I am a big fan of their well-done blog.  Granted, some of the posts — like most checked out items per month — are interesting to a fairly small segment of the population, but others are appealing to a broad range of folks.  One particular series that has grabbed my interest is “50 books, 150 Pages or Less”.  This three part series (part 1, part 2, part 3) includes novels — mostly literary, but there is plenty of neat genre stuff mixed in — 150 pages or less in length.  Michael Chabon, Don DeLillo, Saul Bellow, Paul Auster, Jerzy Kosinski, Doris Lessing, Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin), Roberto Bolaño, Nicholson Baker, Ian McEwan, Joyce Carol Oates and many others are represented in this wonderful bibliography which proves that great literature by heavy hitters doesn’t have to be… heavy.
